The inaugural Designers’ Platform was a curated collection of emerging Houston designers, hosted by seasoned designer Chloe Dao and Houston Chronicle fashion + beauty editor Joy Sewing.
Here’s what we saw from former Houston Community College (HCC) and Art Institute of Houston students.
NICOLE KANG, “Printemps”
With the use of neoprene and springtime hues, Nicole Kang opened the show with oversized conceptual looks.
MISHELLE CHAYEB, “Bloom”
Venezuelan-born designer and fashion illustrator, Mishelle Chayeb, presented a collection full of tulle and hand embroidered flowers.
SANAZ EKHLASSI, “Technibird”
The Spring/Summer 2019 collection was inspired by the hummingbird. Sanaz Eklassi incorporated exotic feathers, rich velvet and bold hues to “create a true technibird.”
WEISHIA CREEVAN, “Midnight Garden”
Searching for an outfit for an upcoming gala or black-tie event? Look no further than Weishia Creevan and her collection of evening wear. From jumpsuits to floor-length gowns, Creevan used floral appliques in a red-purple shade.
MOYOSORE LAMILISA, “Maimed”
A collection with a socio-political theme, this collection was inspired by the effects of war.
DAIANE ELERT, “Tropicalia”
Take us somewhere tropical, ASAP! Movement, silk fabric and ice-dyed techniques represented a beach and the fluidity of waves.
VIOLET NAVARRO, “The Madness”
Has Houston seen cosplay on a runway before? If not, Violet Navarro recreated characters from well-known movies, books and video games.
EBONY TERRELL TAYLOR, “Rebirth”
This Art Institute of Houston graduate used faux fur, neoprene and vinyl to create wearable fashion.
KYNDALL BOLLMEYER, “Descante”
Inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Kyndall Bollmeyer’s collection was a “progression of tearing down the walls of limitation.”
SILVIA OTAOLA, “Taíno”
Hmm, a remote island in the Caribbean sounds perfect for the spring, and we know just the accessories line to pack — Silvia Otaola’s.
MAITE BRADFORD, “Dragonfly”
Inspired by the dragonfly, Maite Bradford’s ready-to-wear collection includes pieces to mix and match for any occasion.
MINDY LIAO, “Fabricgami”
Mindy Liao presented a collection of evening and formal wear inspired by geometric shapes and origami.
HUGO PEREZ, “Viva La Vida”
The gold used throughout Hugo Perez’s collection symbolizes a luxurious lifestyle.
